In 2021, the Centre for Environmental Rights (CER), in partnership with its clients, the African Climate Alliance (ACA), Vukani Environmental Movement, (VEM) and groundWork (gW), embarked on the landmark youth-led climate change litigation and a constitutional challenge to the government’s plans to develop 1500 megawatts of new coal-fired electricity generation. In the case, the applicants argue that the government’s plans to develop new coal plants threaten the Constitutionally-enshrined right to an environment not harmful to the health or wellbeing of present and future generations in South Africa (Section24). To commemorate and celebrate the climate action strides the youth have made towards demanding a fossil-free future, the CER commissioned multi-disciplinary artist, Breeze Yoko, to create a #CancelCoal mural at Bardale High School (Mfuleni, Cape Town), and run an art-activism workshop on the 25th and 26th of August, 2022.

During the Table Mountain fire on Sunday, 18 April 2021, which heavily affected the University of Cape Town’s Rondebosch campus and surrounds, nearly 4 000 students were evacuated from residences and moved to emergency accommodation sites around Cape Town. This film documents their return to residences on campus.

The 2018 South African Urban Conference followed on from the 2017 event, which focused specifically on communication and engaging with urban stakeholders on the content of the IUDF (Integrated Urban Development Framework). At this follow up event, the aim was to further embed the IUDF agenda by focusing on what implementation means in practice. The following film was produced as a departure point for this conversation.
